Day 17 (lock down)

Thursday 9th April - bike ***** - Felixstowe circuit via Kirton Creek – Sunny.

We decided last night to get out early on our bikes, firstly it will be much quieter and secondly because of the full moon there will be a particularly low tide and we wanted to see how much of the fort will be exposed at The Dip. We left home just after 6.30 too late for the sunrise but on reaching the seafront we discovered that a low bank of cloud had delayed the sunrise. It was a bit nippy but lovely none the less with loads of rocks showing on the water edge. At the end of the prom you take the road around getting our first view of the fort, well three little rocks showing in a mirror flat sea! At The Dip fellow windsurfers Chris Stephens and Ian Clarke had come down to have a look at the underwhelming sight of the Fort which is actually called Walton Castle apparently. There are several windsurfing fins and fishing weights on the fort but more worryingly for us windsurfers are a clump of rock near a groyne. While having a quick catch-up at a safe distance of course! We continue to the River Deben where we sit behind the rocks for a quick cuppa and our brioche with the sun peeking out in between some interesting clouds causing some nice reflections on the water, just stunning. We carry onto the Ferry where we have a walk around the boatyard for yet more fantastic reflections:) Then it’s out onto the River Deben footpath and only see the odd dog walker and everyone we meet out is very friendly and we try to give each other as much space as possible. This is a lovely time in the morning, great light and even better scenery with loads of swans paired up in the dykes behind the river! At Kings Fleet where they are cutting the reeds, we decide to continue past Ramsholt to Kirton Creek. With loads of mud showing there are a few birds feeding including some Avocets. At the Creek we turn left and take foot paths and country lanes to Kirton spotting a deer too! The ride is going so well that we carry onto Grimston Lane to see if the deer were there again. There were eight by the three trees but they seemed a bit nervous today. Then it was back through the trees coming out eventually at the railway crossing at the end of Felixstowe docks and up onto the prom and home. What a top bike ride seeing all the best that Suffolk has to offer, just stunning:)
